How much drywall joint compound do you need?
Multiply the accepted finished board area by the selected product's compound amount, then divide by that product record's reference area. Add a project allowance only when you can explain it, and round the resulting amount up to the current container or bag size.
Leave the coverage fields blank until you have a record that matches the manufacturer, product, application, package and market. A finish-level label alone does not supply a universal consumption rate.

Which drywall area belongs in the calculation?
Use the accepted gypsum-panel face area that receives the treatment described by the coverage source. Add walls and ceilings only when they use the same compound record and finishing scope.
The Drywall Calculator can produce net measured area and sheet-layout checks. A sheet purchase count multiplied by panel face area can overstate the installed surface when unused sheets remain, so carry the reviewed installed or scheduled area into this calculator.
- Keep separate products, finish systems and work areas on separate rows.
- Count both faces only when both receive the stated treatment.
- Exclude panels or faces outside the product scope.
- Record repairs, full-surface skim coats, texture and special beads separately when their consumption basis differs.

How should you record product coverage?
Save the manufacturer, exact product name, product number, coverage amount, reference area, application scope, package, market, document revision and retrieval date. Keep qualifiers such as “approximately” and a published range in the record.

USG's J371 guide says its compound tables are approximate and that substrate condition, tools, application method and other job factors can change coverage. Use field records from comparable accepted work when the project procedure permits them, with the product and conditions identified.
What formula calculates joint compound packages?
The formula scales a declared product amount through a declared area. It applies allowance before the package ratio and whole-package rounding.
Amount per area = product amount ÷ coverage reference area
Base compound = finished board area × amount per area
Planning compound = base compound × (1 + entered allowance ÷ 100)
Whole packages = ceiling(planning compound ÷ package size)
Package-rounding remainder = whole packages × package size − planning compound
The calculator keeps the unrounded package ratio visible. That ratio helps a buyer see whether a small change in coverage, area or allowance crosses the next package boundary.
Worked example: 1,000 square feet with a named USG record
USG's UltraLightweight All Purpose Joint Compound submittal J2051 states approximate coverage of 9 to 10 US gal per 1,000 ft² of gypsum panels. It lists a 4.5 US gal pail among the named packages and notes that package availability can vary by market.
Choose 9 US gal as the declared lower endpoint for the first fixture, with 0% allowance:
- Base amount: 1,000 × 9 ÷ 1,000 = 9 US gal.
- Exact package ratio: 9 ÷ 4.5 = 2.
- Whole packages: 2 pails.
- Purchased amount: 2 × 4.5 = 9 US gal.
- Package remainder: 9 − 9 = 0 US gal.
The current USG FAQ gives the same named planning point as approximately two 4.5 gal pails per 1,000 ft². The word approximately remains part of both records.
How does the 9 to 10 gallon range change the purchase?
The upper endpoint crosses a package boundary for the same 1,000 ft² and 4.5 gal package. Record which endpoint or project method controls the order.

The table does not choose the lower endpoint to reduce the order. Use the applicable manufacturer record, project requirements and a documented planning decision.
How do allowance and package rounding differ?
Allowance changes the planning amount before purchase rounding. Package rounding changes the purchased amount because suppliers sell complete containers or bags.
Example: 500 ft² at the declared 9 gal per 1,000 ft² basis gives 4.5 gal. A user-entered 10% allowance adds 0.45 gal, producing a 4.95 gal planning amount.
Exact packages = 4.95 ÷ 4.5 = 1.1
Whole packages = ceiling(1.1) = 2
Purchased amount = 2 × 4.5 = 9 US gal
Package-rounding remainder = 9 − 4.95 = 4.05 US gal
Do not add the 4.05 gal remainder back into the allowance. Track accepted unopened or usable leftover product in a stock record before the next purchase.
Can ready-mix gallons be converted into dry-compound pounds?
Use separate calculations. A volume-to-mass conversion needs the exact product's supported density and material state. Ready-mix compounds contain water and formulation-specific ingredients, while setting compounds use dry package mass plus a separate mixing procedure.
Select ready-mix volume when the coverage and package use gallons or litres. Select dry compound mass when the applicable record uses pounds or kilograms. Changing the quantity basis clears the amount and package fields so an old gallon value cannot become a pound value.
A project that uses one product for tape embedding and another for finish coats needs one calculation per product. Add unlike package counts only in a purchasing schedule, not as though the materials share one coverage rate.
Does the finish level supply a universal compound rate?
The finish level defines a required treatment outcome under the controlling documents. Product type, joint length, corner treatment, fasteners, beads, substrate, tools, application method and full-surface work can change consumption.
Use a coverage record whose application matches the required finish. A skim-coat operation across the full panel face can need a different record from ordinary joint finishing. Texture, patching and deep fills also need their own applicable product instructions.
This calculator leaves finish level out of the interface because the product coverage record carries the quantity basis. Keep the finish level and treatment description beside that record for review.
How does the metric switch work?
The unit switch converts the entered record without changing its package ratio. It uses exact conversion relationships and preserves the product's original scope.
For the 9 gal fixture, 1,000 ft² becomes 92.90304 m², 9 US gal becomes 34.068706056 L and a 4.5 US gal package becomes 17.034353028 L. The result remains 2 packages.
A converted US package does not prove that a 17.034 L product is sold in another market. Enter the package and coverage from the current product record for that market before ordering.

Safety, storage and product limits
Read the current safety data and product instructions before mixing, applying or sanding joint compound. USG J2051 tells users to keep its named ready-mix container sealed, protect it from freezing and extreme heat, and use the stated dry storage range. Those instructions do not transfer to another product.
OSHA states that dry sanding joint compound can create high nuisance-dust exposure and that longer work in dusty conditions can change silica obligations. NIOSH reports that vacuum sanding controls cut dust exposure in its cited drywall-sanding tests. Employers need a task and site assessment under the applicable workplace rules.
